We were trying to put the x-mas tree up the other night, but with a silly white cat around, it seems rather impossible.

He insisted on staying inside the x-mas tree box.

And wouldn't let Peter put the x-mas tree up.

Meanwhile Romy wasn't impress at all and just rolled her eyes at Whitty.

This year is Whitty's third x-mas and still he does this every year....boy oh boy wish us luck!

How would one translate this into English? I'm not sure either whether such term exist in English but anyhow yes I need to get this out. On the net, yes sure why not I bet some of you have had the same experience before, or to save you from experiencing one in the future.

Sometime 2.5 months ago, my aunt who lives in Sidoarjo said to me that a-relative-of-her-late-best-friend's-daughter whom live in Holland came home for holiday (you guys still with me up to this point). She asked whether I would want something back from Holland via that person, lets say her name was Mrs. B. At first I said, "no, I don't know Mrs. B and it would be a lot of trouble for her." My aunt said it's ok because she offered that and my aunt was close to that family. At that point I had my doubt already since some time ago I made a point not to bring stuff via someone else other than my best friends. It is unpractical and a lot of trouble for the "bringer" (is this even a proper English word)

Anyway Mrs. B brought 3 books for me and I was supposed to pick it up at her house, somewhere in North Holland. I was totally fine with it since I was the one who caused her trouble and I thought it would be nice to thank her in person. Before I got to call Mrs B, on Wednesday evening someone else called me, lets say her name was Mrs X. Over the phone she said that she has gotten all my books from Mrs. B at the airport since she has picked her stuff already there. So she thought since she lives nearer to me than Mrs. B, instead of me going to Mrs B, I could pick my stuff at her house. In the back of my mind I thought, "uh oh eh why did she have to take my stuff, I'm capable of picking it up myself."

Over the phone we made an appointment that I would pick my stuff on Friday evening. I thought, "huff not as bad as I thought it would be, everything is settled." Until on Thursday evening she called again and said she and her friends would go over to my town for a shopping trip on Friday afternoon. Over the phone she offered that they could pass by my house and give me my stuff. I hesitated by saying I don't mind going over to her house on Friday evening at all but she insisted that it's ok they're going to go to my town anyway. Without saying exactly what time they would be in my town I said fine, I just want this to be over with.

On Friday afternoon they didn't call until almost my time to cook dinner time. Mrs X and her friends were frantically calling on the phone saying they couldn't find my address. I explained elaborately over the phone how to get to my house from downtown, even offering that I could take my bike and meet them there, since from their explanation they were like only 1km away. But no they insisted still that they would try to find my place though up to now I smelled that its-your-fault-we-are-stuck-here tone in their call. They called some more after that, still couldn't find my house and they didn't have GPS. Until this point I said that I would meet them where they are now, and all this while I have burning stove for dinner. Still in their unfriendly its-your-fault-we-are stuck-here they sulked while asking how long would it take for me to get there which I replied that it would only take me less than 5 minutes. As I put my shoes on I saw Peter just went inside the house so I asked him to meet them at the place they told me. Peter went and I thought they have met and everything is allrite, NOT. They just left the aforementioned meeting place, despite it was exactly 5 minutes when I said to them I would meet them in 5 minutes. Left without explanation or any phone call, as it was my fault they had to drive here and meet me.

Ugh up until this point I was angry already but managed my temper. I thought I didn't ask you Mrs. X to bring my stuff, I didn't ask you to go all the way to my town to bring my stuff. I was like, darn this is just the way you some Indonesian treat other Indonesian, esp those who have been living here longer, let's say some sort of seniority attitude. It's like they feel they wanted to be needed but when you didn't kiss up their *ss as much as they would like it to be, they flipped, but sorry Mrs. X I'm not a small newbie Indonesian you think I was eh. I treat and respect people all the same no kissing *ss involved!

Since I thought that's the way she treated me her fellow Indonesian, fine I asked my husband to call and ask politely if she could send the stuff instead and we would reimburse whatever she would be spending on the post. Back and forth 2 months until now she still didn't send it until tonite Peter said he would be going to the area where Mrs. X live and thought he would give her a call and said he would pick it up this weekend. She picked up her phone allright but hung up immediately after Peter said that it was him indeed calling. He didn't even get the chance to explain himself. Uh oh so much for politeness....

No I usually don't diss on the net 'cos I thought what's the point, but somehow I feel this is a very common problem among us Indonesian living abroad, seniority in the form of how you treat fellow countrymen (in this case countrymowen) whom you feel your junior and bullying. I thought I'd share and maybe you can share your story. Yes I have heard other stories otherwise I wouldn't call this common problem.

This autumn we could enjoy the birds in our garden, happily eating the food we provide them. Though we have two bird feeders, but this one with raw peanuts seems to be the hit with all the birds.

New Cat Door

It's getting cold outside, so we (no not we, Peter then) made a new cat door on the shed. So whenever the cats are still outside but no one is at home they could shelter temporarily from the cold while helping themselves with water, and snacks. When they feel sleepy they could use the tent or bed there too ;) Oh what spoiled cats.

Gak terasa udah bulan Oktober yang artinya musim gugur udah dimulai. Itu artinya waktu yang tepat untuk mulai menanam tulip atau bunga-bunga musim semi. Whitty seperti biasa selalu ingin ikut-ikutan. Sewaktu kita menggali lubang untuk tulip kok ya sempat-sempatnya dia pipis dulu di lubang itu dan nggak lupa lubang dia tutup lagi. @_@

Akhirnya berry-berryku matang juga, belum semua sih tapi setidaknya lumayan untuk dibuat satu toples kecil selai. Ohya ternyata postinganku yang dulu itu, yang bilang kita punya raspberry, aku ralat ya, ternyata aku salah sodara2 hehe, bukan raspberry namun blackberry alias bramen kalo bahasa Belandanya.

Whitty si kucing yang selalu penasaran, pasti pengen tau aja kalo bosnya lagi melakukan sesuatu.

Cakep ya blueberrynya :)

Ini blackberrynya, kalo belum matang memang rada mirip ama raspberry yaitu merah muda tapi lama kelamaan bentuknya berubah dan kalo matang jadi hitam deh warnanya.

Ini dia 3 macam berry-berryku :) siap dibuat selai.

Kemaren udah ngelakuin:

- dusting the whole house
- vacuum the whole house
- ngepel the whole house
- semuanya inclusive kamar mandi dan toilet
- nyepeda ngambil paket pos di kantor pos yang jauh
- sekalian belanja disana (secara AH disana XL)

Hari ini udah ngelakuin:

- laundry folding (hari gini setrika heheh)
- laundry washing
- masak rendang 3kg (ngaduknya aja sekian2 jam)
- filing administrasi yang udah numpuk sebulan (pfiuh)
- updating this blog

Besok rencana mau:

- bikin selai berry
- mulai ngecat heater (biru tua lo tar warnanya)
- bikin cake coklat
- beberes loteng (kalo sempet n mood)

Btw ini apa maksudnya sih, kok nulis2 to do list di blog? Nggak punya agenda ya? Nggak sih iseng aja ^_^ pengen liat kalo ditulis hal-hal yang dilakukan tiap hari banyak apa nggak sih? Bakal try to update this list every couple days.

We're Back

Err 3 weeks without internet was not nice at all but we survived. Haha. I did though once or twice went to our old place, nonchalantly sitting by the river while what I was doing actually "borrowing" internet from our old neighbour. @_@

Now we're back, still SO MANY things to do, no I'm not exaggerating here. Here are some stuff that we still need to do:
1. Paint stair.
2. Paint radiator in the living and dining room.
3. Paint doors.
4. Clean up the attic (it's a HUGE mess)
5. Refurbish the bath room (this one we got is like from the 70's @_@ )
6. Hide some odd stuff in the kitchen (exposed lining of the ceiling)

One major thing that I wanted to do but he's not very keen on the idea since it's going to involve big work. That thing is to paint the whole front surface of the house in white, so it would be in sync with the neighbours and also to add modern touch, but this is more for later.

But it's a home now and we love this house to bits, the cats seems to love it too, now that we don't see them much during the day.

Nah kemaren kan udah diceritain dikit tentang kebun, sekarang kita masuk ke dalam rumah yuuk.

Ini livingroom before, ih warnanya gak menarik banget yah, serasa di tahun 80an, apalagi dengan tambahan wallpaper sebaris di tengah-tengah itu. Pertama tama kelupas tu wallpaper, bagian yg coklat tua dibawah dicat base dulu warna putih, tujuannya supaya tar kalo ditimpa warna yang kita mau, warna coklat tua itu nggak keliatan lagi.

Tapi menurut kita, stained glass di depan itu (di atas jendela) cantik banget, klasik gitu. Itu asli loh dari jaman dulu kala mulai rumah ini dibangun alias tahun 1925. Jadi udah 85 tahun rumah ini berdiri, tua juga ya.

Nah ini jadinya, biru di satu sisi, sisi lainnya broken white alias warna putih yg rusak hehe.

Ini temenku Yeni lagi gantiin pacarnya (yang tentu aja tinggi orangnya) ngecat plafon. Buat kita-kita orang Indonesia yang notabene nggak tinggi, kita nggak kekurangan akal donk, pakailah kursi :p

Yang ini salah satu kamar tidur di lantai atas. Mengapa oh mengapa warnanya mencolok mata banget banget. Oranye plus ungu tua, nah warna-warna tua begini nih yang ngabisin cat, pertama harus dicat base putih dulu, baru dicat warna yang kita mau.

Ayo Yeni dan Jacco, cat jadi putih semuanya :D

Mungkin karena kebanyakan bau'in cat, Yeni jadi mabok cat, hehe piss Yen.

Yang ini bapak mertuaku lagi ngecat pinggir2 plafon, ini dapur plus kamar makan nyambung jadi satu ke living room yang tadi, jadi semuanya terbuka dan legaaaaaa.....nah pintu belakang itu nyambung ke kebun gitu. Asyik kalo summer, pintu dua-duanya bisa dibuka semua :D

Ehya, ovenku sekarang jadi besar :D asyik!!!!!

Lagi naruh bahan makanan ke pantry alias voorraadkast dalam bahasa Belanda. Pantry itu biasanya ruangan atau lemari untuk nyimpen bahan makanan kering seperti; makanan kaleng, aneka jenis krupuk, aneka jenis tepung dll. Bisa juga untuk tempat nyimpen alat-alat masak yang jarang dipakai di dapur. Pantryku ini ada di bawah tangga, jadi ala-ala kamarnya si Harry Potter gitu.

Eh tapi kok kalo di Indonesia, setau aku pantry itu malahan dapur bersih, tempat sarapan dengan kursi-kursi tinggi gitu. *Bingung

Segitu dulu update-an cerita bebenah rumah baru ya, mau tidur dulu secara tepar banget tiap hari kegiatan cuma ngecat, beberes ajah.

Kebun Baru Kita

Akhirnya setelah perjuangan melelahkan (eh ini nggak lebay ya), tgl 31 Mei kemaren kita dapat juga kunci rumah baru kita, juga tandatangan kontrak jual beli rumah, yang artinya rumah udah resmi milik kita. HOREEEE...........

Tapi kok malah pengen cerita-cerita tentang kebun ya (maklum norak, gak pernah punya kebun di Belanda).

Kebunnya ini di belakang rumah, nggak terlalu besar sih luasnya 49m2 (panjang 9,75m dan lebar 5m). Waktu hari pertama bebersih keadaannya sungguh memprihatinkan, daun-daun dari musim gugur tahun lalu belum juga dibersihkan. Tanaman-tanaman mati di dalam pot. Tapi dengan bantuan temen-temen (Astri n Yeni) sekarang udah jauh lebih bersih.

Hampir semua tanamannya juga aku cabut dan buang secara memang rata-rata semuanya hama dan tanaman mati hehehe.

Tapi ada juga beberapa tanaman yang aku biarin seperti di bawah ini:

Tapi kok lom berbuah ya, padahal aku liat di tempat-tempat lain dah pada semarak berbuah semua. Apa karena gak dirawat dengan baik ama pemilik lama?

Kalo yang ini sih setau aku buahnya panen nanti di akhir summer. Lucu deh kalo siang2 pada banyak lebah datang untuk ngambil nectar.

Kalo yang jenis ini, memang kalo dah mateng tetep hijau, cuma sekarang belum matang kok jadi mbak Rachmah jangan datang dulu ke rumahku hehe.

Kalo yang ini memamg baru ditanam ama Ron, temen kita. Ceritanya dia numpang nanem. Dah pada tau semua kan ini apaan ;)

Nah ini dia petani "hemp"nya.

Cerita ngecat dll nyusul yak (emang ada yang nungguin gitu?)

PS: Mbak R, jadi kapan mau kesini nengok beri-berianku. Sekalian lo tembok, kusen, jendela, pintu masih banyak yg lom dicat ;)

Preman Kok Dipremanin

Sewaktu pulang mudik kemaren, pastinya banyak cerita2nya donk. Mulai yang sedih karena bapakku sakit dan akhirnya meninggal tapi ada juga cerita2 lucu yangnyempil.

Ceritanya aku, Masbul, budeku (Bu Sul), Mbak Lia, Mbak Rachmah, Putri dan Mbak Tjita beserta putrinya lagi keliling2 kota Surabaya. Eh yang pada ngira aku orang Bali asli, siap2 kecewa aja (ye kok GR bener) aslinya bapakku dari Surabaya tapi aku udah tinggal di Bali dari umur 5 tahun, aku juga lahirnya di Surabaya, jadi Surabaya selalu jadi kota yang aku kangenin dan wajib dikunjungi kalo mudik.

Eh kok malah ngelantur, balik lagi ke cerita jalan2. Nah kita pengen ngeliat makam Belanda tua di Peneleh sono. Mbak Lia nginfo kalo kesana pake kamera segede2 gaban pastinya bakal dipalak ama preman, yah barang 50rebuan. Menurut cerita Mbak Lia juga, kalo di sana sekarang marak dipakai ajang pemotretan untuk komersial macam fashion shoot atau pre-weddinglah, jadi pastinya jadi sasaran empuk preman. Ih sapa juga yang sudi ngasih duit ke preman gratisan mending juga dipake jajan bakso rame2. Sambil mikir2 jadi apa nggak kesana, dengan Masbul yang udah muka rada ketakutan (yg ini rada lebay, dy waktu itu ga sampe segitunya kok hehe) denger cerita ada kemungkinan kita dipalak preman. Tapi dasar cewek2 Surabaya pada "preman" juga hehe, kita putuskan maju terus pantang mundur!!!

Nyampe sana, kita masuk ke areal makam lewat pemukiman penduduk. Mikir2 kok bisa lewat pemukiman, la gerbangnya mana nih? Udah sampe di dalam, loh kok ada seorang laki2 yg ngikutin? Sambil sikut2an satu sama lain, kita ngerti kalo itulah yg kita obrolin tadi alias premannya.

"Mbak, mau kemana," tanya Mas Preman.

"Err, ini si Bule mau ngunjungin makam nenek moyangnya," jawab entah Mbak Rachmah atau Mbak Lia, sambil nunjuk2 Masbul yang bengong (sepertinya sih ketakutan hiahaha).

"Udah tau tempatnya belum Mbak," Mas Preman masih nggak mau nyerah.

"Udah kok, ini bulenya udah dikasih tau ama orang tuanya dimana tempatnya," jawab kita PD setinggi langit.

Sambil bengong2 si Masbul bingung, apa sih yang terjadi, ya sudah aku ceritain aja kita akan mengunjungi makam nenek moyangnya dia. Ini ide spontan dari Mbak2 Preman kok keren banget sih, nggak terpikir olehku sebelumnya.

"Lah aku kan ga ada nenek moyang disini," jawab dia polos.

Duh dasar ini bule, kejujuran dari negaranya masih juga dibawa2 ke Indonesia, gak tau apa kalo terlalu jujur tar gak selamat di negara ini hehehe...

"Ya pura2 aja ada gitu," kataku.

Eh si Mas Preman kok ya masih ngikutin aja di belakang, pastinya masih curiga nih secara kita kok jalan muter2 aja ga jelas, niat ngunjungi makam nenek moyang apa nggak sih?

"Mendingan Masbul jalan di depan, mimpin kita gitu ceritanya nyari makam nenek moyangnya dia, lalu kita berdoa gitulah disana," saran Mbak2 Preman

Jalanlah kita beriringan dengan formasi Masbul paling depan, tak lupa diiringi tatapan Mas Preman kira2 300m di belakang kita.

Sampai di sebuah makam yang lumayan meyakinkan, kita berhenti

dan jongkok untuk berdo'a sejenak mendoakan nenek moyang van Sark aspal. Mas Preman sepertinya percaya dengan aksi kita karena abis itu dia pergi hehe.

Seperginya Mas Preman, it's show time, poto2an. Eh ada yang narsisnya kumat (kalo itu mah selalu ya Mbak ;) )

Udah puas poto2an n juga karena kaki gatal2 kena rumput n tanaman liar di makam kita beranjak pulang. Loh dihadang lagi donk ama Mas Preman.

"Tadi itu nengok makam apa poto2 sih Mbak?," tanyanya dengan nada rada ga enak.

"Loh Pak, nggak liat apa tadi kita berdoa di makam yang pojokan itu," jawab Mbak2 Preman sambil nunjuk ke arah pojokan.

"Oh emang gimana keadaannya Mbak?" tanyanya lagi masih nggak percaya sepertinya.

"Ya gitu deh Pak, bolong rusak," jawaban standar banget secara semua makam keadaannya memang begitu hiahaha.....

Ini lo potograpernye ;)

"Nanti kamu cerita ya ke ortu kamu, dah ngunjungi makam nenek moyang van Sark," kataku ke Masbul.

Eh kali ini kita ditunjukin jalan keluar lewat gerbang aslinya. Sambil tetep pasang muka lurus kita keluar padahal asli lagi nahan ketawa.

Sampai di mobil, pecahlah ketawa kita2.....hiahahhaa preman kok ya mau dipremanin, ya gak mempan donk :P

Makasih buat Mbak2 Preman untuk kenangan yang gak akan terlupakan ini ^_^

Satu jam di dalam perjalanan bermobil, ceritanya latihan ngobrol (tepatnya latihan wawancara menghadapi para sodara2 yang "bule-penasaran" dengan pertanyaan2 khas orang Indonesia) dalam Bahasa Indonesia sebagai persiapan mudik tahun ini. Halah.

Rurie: "Nama kamu siapa?"
Peter: "Namaku Peter"

R: "Kamu sudah makan?"
P: "Belum."
Ini mah jelas2 pasti jawab belum, dasar demen makan gratis. Rubah skenario, kalo seumpama sudah makan tapi tetep ditawari (baca: dipaksa) makan. Sesuatu yang biasa terjadi di Indonesia pada umumnya atau di kampung ibuku pada khususnya (maafkan gaya bahasa yang nggilani ini).

R: "Kamu sudah makan?"
P: "Makasih, aku sudah makan."

R: "Kamu suka makanan apa?"
P: "Aku suka ayam kecap, gado-gado, pecel dan sate ayam. "
Haha semuanya makanan Indonesia, bagus bagus.

R: "Makanan Belanda apa yang enak?"
P: "Niks" (artinya: nggak ada)
Yahhh kasihan bener sih nggak ada makanan Belanda yang enak.
P: "Ok then nasi goreng."
Yah itu mah bukan makanan asli Belanda kali........tetep aja asalnya dari Indonesia.

R: "Pekerjaan kamu apa?"
P: "Pekerjaanku web design."

R: "Gaji kamu berapa?"
P: "Gajiku nggak cukup."
Hahahaha.

R: "Umur kamu berapa?"
P: "Umur, what is umur?"
Itu loh age.
P: "Umurku 23."
Hah masak iya?????? Huh ternyata kebawa Bahasa Belanda yang kalo nyebutin angka, disebut dari angka yang belakang. T.T
R: "32 kali?"
P: "Oh ya 32."

R: "Kalo umur orangtua kamu berapa?"
P: "Err what is orangtua, orang is man and tua is old, so oldman is parents?"
Yaya pintar......
P: "Umur orangtuaku..........satu dua tiga empat lima.......en then?"
Yahhh berhitung kok cuma bisa sampe lima.

R: "Apakah kamu VOC Belanda?"
P: "Tidak, aku bukan VOC, aku tidak suka VOC."
R: "Lalu kamu apa donk?"
P: "Aku bule putih sekali."
Hahaha dubraks.

P: "Mau sarapan telor mata sapi atau telor berus?"

A Game We Call House Hunting

House hunting is like a game on its own.
Either the bathroom is too small to put a second toilet.
Bathroom is big with a bath tub but the kitchen is a tiny chamber with a closed door.
The kitchen is open and huge but the bedrooms size reminds me of my clothes cupboard.
The bedrooms are spacious and ok but non existence of the garden is bothering us.
Finally everything is ok but wait just 100m away is a not-so-pretty-neighborhood which means source of lotsa trouble in the future.
